The best time to visit Tanzania for a safari is during the dry season from late June to October. Tanzania has two distinct rainy seasons: April to May (the ‘long rains’) and November to December (the ‘short rains’). In Tanzania, there are 2 wet seasons and a dry season. The wet season usually occurs from mid-March to early June for the long rains and from October to December for the short rains. In the coastal areas, the climate is hot and humid, as you move inland towards the highlands the temperature becomes cooler and temperate.
Dry Season in Tanzania
Generally, the dry months, late June to October. Give better wildlife sightings, but they are also the most crowded months to visit. The country has low and high seasons in different areas at different times, due to the movement of the animals and the rainfall.
The wildebeest migration is best to be seen in the mid of July in the northern Serengeti, until the end of August.
At the beginning of November, you can see turn migration from Masai Mara to Serengeti.
In the morning and during the night it gets cold so we recommend bringing warm clothes for morning game drives during the months of June, July, and August.
Animals are easier to spot in the dry season since they concentrate around waterholes and rivers. You may see only a few mosquitoes because there is little to no rain. The sky is usually clear and most days are sunny.
Wet Season in Tanzania
In December, there is a short rain which makes national parks very green.
In January in February, usually, there are no rains, there are a lot of animals, that are easy to spot. The game is more widely dispersed, at this time due to there being more water available, but can still offer rewarding safaris. Most of the animals give birth to the babies – as there is a lot of food available.
March, April, and May are the heavy rain months.
Except for March, April, and May, rains are mostly short afternoon showers and seldom have a negative impact on your trip.
